Today, the 10th of June, 2018 brought a dark cloud that has covered the whole reggae dynasty in the country. A Legend dies from a mysterious ailment just a day of travelling to the United States of America.
Ras Kimon (Ukeleke Onwubuya) became very popular in the late 90's when he debuted with the hit reggae single "Rum-Bar Stylee"; a song that became a major rave in the country and Africa. The Asaba descendant contributed in no small way to the music industry of Nigeria. Till his unfortunate and untimely death, he was still very active and very relevant in on stages across the globe. The 60 year old lived a very propitious life.
The cause of his death is still buried in mystery as the little information in circulation on social media has not given the anxious fans a convincing reasons for his death. They say that he complained of severe abdominal pain and was rushed into the emergency unit of an unnamed hospital in Ikeja yesterday, but was later transferred to the popular and very capable Lagoon Hospital on the Island. The sad news is that he didn't make it eventually. Now the world awaits a reasonable press release from the family, or those with whom he spent his last happy moments on earth with.
I can still remember his magnificent performance at the last Lagos Reggae Festival (LAREF 2017). I never knew i was watching perform for the last time. But heaven knows that i will never forget the magic of the moment. Some were born great, others had greatness entrusted on them... Ras kimono definitely created his greatness through hard work and vision. Thank God his efforts paid off...as today, he will be remembered for his indelible contribution the the music industry, especially to the reggae dynasty.
I Love Ras Kimono!!!
Watch his last performance:
The most recent Lagos Reggae Festival witnessed a performance that was unprecedented. The legend gave the reggae lovers a memory that would never be deleted from their memories. Recording that video was an exciting experience for me. Just watching him perform was a huge inspiration. I wish young artistes can emulate such stage charisma and realness. This is a true performer. Nigerians will never forget him in a hurry, and believe me... he will be immortalized.
